The NHL?s trade deadline day is only a couple days away, and GM?s all over the league are looking to improve their clubs. Some teams are looking to go on a playoff run, while others are looking to sell off their parts to build for the future. Here?s a look at some of the names that could be switching jerseys before 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, starting with the Western Conference. Ladislav Nagy, LW, Los Angeles Kings Contract Status: Unrestricted free agent July 1st. Nagy is a talented offensive player, who oftentimes leaves you wanting more. Injury concerns are there as well, but is a top-6 player on most teams in the league. No contract after this season could make him more attractive to teams who are wary about him long term. Was traded to Dallas at last year?s deadline for Mattias Tjarnqvist and a 1st round pick. Scott Thornton and Brian Willsie, LW and RW, Los Angeles Kings Contract Status: Unrestricted free agents July 1st. I put these two players together because they are similar players who could be useful for some teams. Third-line checking forwards become very valuable and often fly under the radar on deadline day. Ducks GM Brian Burke acquired Brad May at last year?s deadline and May contributed significantly. Both players are playoff seasoned and would be valuable to any team lacking grit. Rob Blake, D, Los Angeles Kings Contract Status: No-Trade Clause, Unrestricted Free Agent July 1st. Rob Blake could be this year?s biggest deadline day deal. Reportedly Blake doesn?t want to move from the Kings, but GM Dean Lombardi will certainly try to convince him otherwise. Blake may have interest in going to a select few teams, but it?s a guessing game to figure out where he?d go, if he waives his no-trade. Don?t expect him to move, but you never know. Brad Stuart, D, Los Angeles Kings Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent July 1st. Brad Stuart might be the consolation prize if Rob Blake decides not to move. Even though he isn?t the offensive force he was a few years ago, he is still a top-4 defenseman for most teams. Expect the action to be very heavy around Stuart. Jarret Stoll, C, Edmonton Oilers Contract Status: Restricted Free Agent July 1st. Stoll?s name has popped up in rumors in recent weeks, as he hasn?t performed up to expectations this season. It would take a lot to get him away from the Oilers, but if they get the right offer, don?t be surprised to see him go. Joni Pitkanen, D, Edmonton Oilers Contract Status: Restricted Free Agent July 1st. Pitkanen?s stock has seemingly fallen from a couple years ago in Philadelphia, but he?ll be an integral part of this club?s future. My gut says he stays in Edmonton, but I said that last year about Ryan Smyth. Dwayne Roloson, G, Edmonton Oilers Contract Status: Signed for next season; cap hit of $3.667 million It probably wouldn?t take much to get Roloson out of Edmonton, as the Oilers would probably like to get his contract off the books. The 38 year old has struggled this season, but someone might be willing to take a flier on him. Martin Lapointe, Yanic Perreault, Jason Williams, Kevyn Adams, Forwards, Chicago Blackhawks Contract Status: All Unrestricted Free Agents July 1st. Chicago would love to make the playoffs this season, but if they don?t feel it is possible, some or all from this group will get moved. Martin Lapointe is often cited as being overpaid, and while that may be true, he still has plenty to give a team as a third line player. He has plenty of playoff experience from his years in Detroit, winning some Cups in the process. Yanic Perreault is still the best face-off man in the NHL, and would be a welcome addition to a team who struggles at the face-off dots. Williams and Adams are useful additions to the third lines, but teams will have to assess if they are better than their current compliment. Patrick Lalime, G, Chicago Blackhawks Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent July 1st. Every Ottawa Senator fan is likely shaking their heads right now, but hear me out. Nobody can deny that Lalime is having a good year for the Hawks, and has ample experience in the playoffs. If anyone is looking for a solid backup at this time of year, Lalime will be at the top of the pack. Nikolai Khabibulin, G, Chicago Blackhawks Contract Status: Signed for next season; cap hit of $6.75 million That contract is probably as good as a no-trade clause for Nikolai. The fact is that rumors will not go away involving the Russian goalie. I can?t see anyone taking a chance on Khabibulin knowing they have to pay him that much money next season. Sergei Fedorov, C, Columbus Blue Jackets Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent July 1st. Fedorov?s star has fallen since his days in Detroit, but he is still an effective player who has always played well in the post-season. The rumors of a return to the Red Wings won?t go away, but there will be other teams bidding for his services. This all hinges on the direction that GM Scott Howson decides to take the team. The Blue Jackets would love to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, but there is a chance here to get major returns on several players. We?ll have to wait and see. Mike Peca, C, Columbus Blue Jackets Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent July 1st. Mike Peca, much like a few other names on this list, will be a third-line type acquisition. He is a great penalty killer and can still chip in offensively. Injuries will be a concern, but not a major one. Adam Foote, D, Columbus Blue Jackets Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent July 1st. The multi-Stanley Cup champion should be on every team?s wish list this coming deadline day. He is rock solid defensively and a great leader. Plus, as someone who has been successful in the playoffs, he will be a calming influence on a younger playoff bound team. Ron Hainsey, D, Columbus Blue Jackets Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent July 1st. Hainsey has flourished under Ken Hitchcock and has become an integral part of the future of the club. However, his contract status does raise questions. I doubt he?ll be in a different jersey come Tuesday, but never say never. Other Western Conference Names To Watch: Alex Tanguay ? Calgary Flames John-Michael Liles ? Colorado Avalanche Geoff Sanderson ? Edmonton Oilers Marty Reasoner ? Edmonton Oilers Radim Vrbata ? Phoenix Coyotes Mike York ? Phoenix Coyotes Patrick Marleau ? San Jose Sharks Ryan Kesler ? Vancouver Brad Richards, Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis, Forwards, Tampa Bay Lightning Contract Status: Richards ? Signed through 2010-2011, $7.8 million, NTC Lecavalier ? Signed through 2008-2009, $6.875 million St. Louis ? Signed through 2010-2011, $5.25 million, NTC The trade rumors surrounding Tampa?s ?Big Three? will not go away. With Dan Boyle likely to get a contract extension, and with GM Jay Feaster likely searching for a starting goalie this off-season, one of these guys might have to move. There is a lot of speculation regarding Brad Richards, but there have been these rumors in previous seasons as well. I don?t know what to think here, but if I had to guess, I?d say one of them goes now, or in the summer to accommodate Boyle. Vaclav Prospal, C/W, Tampa Bay Lightning Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent July 1st. Much like Nagy, Prospal is intriguing. He often leaves you wanting more, but there is no denying his talent. He could be the answer to a team looking for secondary scoring. Chris Gratton, C, Tampa Bay Lightning Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent July 1st. Gratton has been an offensive disappointment over the years, but to his credit, has become a reliable checking center over his career. Much like Peca, he can do a little bit of everything, and you aren?t committed beyond this season. Dan Boyle, D, Tampa Bay Lightning Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent July 1st. Tampa GM Jay Feaster would love to re-sign Dan Boyle, no question about it. However, he realizes he has a really valuable asset if negotiations fall through. Boyle is one of the elite defensemen in the NHL, and would fetch a large return, if offered around the league. Expect him to re-sign in Tampa before the deadline. Mats Sundin, C, Toronto Maple Leafs Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent July 1st, NTC. We have hit the big fish of this year?s trade deadline day. The Leafs captain is still one of the elite players in the league, and would net a very healthy return if the Leafs move him. The problem is he has a no trade clause. Sundin has professed his love for the city and the organization and has repeatedly said that he is not going anywhere. However, rumors persist that interim GM Cliff Fletcher is attempting to persuade the big Swede to change his mind. Fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs, this is your franchise defining moment. If Sundin decides to waive his no trade, you will begin the rebuilding process with major assets. If he decides to stay, you may have just missed out on your biggest opportunity to land top-flight young talent. It will be a nervous day in Leaf Nation. Darcy Tucker, LW, Toronto Maple Leafs Contract Status: Signed through 2010-2011; cap hit of $3 million, NTC Almost everyone on the Leaf roster is mentioned in daily rumors, but Tucker is one that is very interesting. Despite playing well over the past few weeks, Tucker has had a disappointing season. However, he has been through the playoff wars, and at $3 million, isn?t a real burden on your salary cap, provided the good play continues. He has also said publicly that he will not waive his no trade clause. Bryan McCabe, D, Toronto Maple Leafs Contract Status: Signed through 2010-2011; $5.75 million, movement clause Toronto?s favorite whipping boy, Bryan McCabe has had a rough season. Injuries have derailed #24?s campaign, and Toronto?s playoff hopes. The Leafs are markedly better when McCabe plays, but a change of scenery might be a good idea. McCabe has a no movement clause, meaning he cannot be removed from the Leafs roster without his consent. It might be a tough sell, but McCabe might be moved on deadline day. Tomas Kaberle, D, Toronto Maple Leafs Contract Status: Signed through 2010-2011; cap hit of $4.25 million, NTC Kaberle seems content with staying in Toronto. The veteran defenceman reportedly blocked a trade to Philadelphia for Jeff Carter and a draft pick. Don?t hold your breath Leaf fans. Olli Jokinen, C, Florida Panthers Contract Status: Signed through 2009-2010; cap hit of $5.25 million There have been rumors about Jokinen for years, but they seem more legit this time around. It?s anyone?s guess if he?ll move or not, but there is no doubt that there would be significant interest in the Finnish all-star. Marian Hossa, RW, Atlanta Thrashers Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent July 1st. It appears that Hossa?s days in Atlanta are numbered. He has said that he wants to test the free agent market, as he knows there is a big payday in it for him. GM Don Waddell has said that he will try to sign the all-star, but he knows he can?t let him go next summer and get nothing for him. Hossa is an impact player who will be very beneficial to whoever lands him. Brian Campbell, D, Buffalo Sabres Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent July 1st. Brian Campbell will most likely get moved unless he re-signs with the Sabres. After losing Daniel Briere and Chris Drury last off-season, GM Darcy Regier knows he needs to get something for Campbell. The slick, puck-moving defenceman could be the best defenseman to get moved. Other Eastern Conference Names To Watch: Bobby Holik ? Atlanta Thrashers Mark Recchi ? Atlanta Thrashers Jeff Hamilton ? Carolina Hurricanes Michael Ryder ? Montreal Canadiens Jaroslav Halak ? Montreal Canadiens Miroslav Satan ? New York Islanders Mike Comrie ? New York Islanders Bryan Berard ? New York Islanders Jaromir Jagr ? New York Rangers Sean Avery ? New York Rangers Ray Emery ? Ottawa Senators Martin Gerber ? Ottawa Senators Well, there you have it. 2,000 words later, the ultimate prep for the NHL?s trade deadline. I don?t expect all these names to move, and who knows, maybe it?ll be a really slow couple of days. I especially think that the guys in the ?Other? columns won?t be going anywhere, but I mentioned them simply because of the rumors surrounding them. Have fun with the day, and good luck to all your teams.
