| 8th January, 2009 - 12:38 pm |  Tribune-Review - The Penguins and center Jordan Staal have reached agreement on a four-year contract extension worth $16 million - a $4 million annual cap hit.
General manager Ray Shero announced the deal today, and Staal's agent, Paul Krepelka, confirmed the financial terms. Stall will play the rest of this season under his entry-level deal; the extension kicks in next season.
Staal will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the extension, under the current CBA. He will be the youngest free agent in NHL history.
"Jordan made no secret he wanted to remain a Penguins," Krepelka said. "The reason this didn't get done in the summer was he wanted to see where he fit. Now, Jordan has no complaints how he's being used. Once that became clear, that he would be used as more than just a No. 3 center, we wanted to get the deal done."
RealGM Note: Staal is currently 231st in FIC and 'deserves' to make $2.75 million. He was ranked 528th during the 2007-08 season and 'deserved' to make $835k. [READ] |
