| 8th May, 2008 - 2:35 am |  Press Release - Tampa Bay Lightning center Jeff Halpern has suffered a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee, it was announced by Lightning Executive Vice President & General Manager Jay Feaster. In addition it was discovered that Halpern also suffered a Grade III injury to the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and a small tear to the lateral meniscus. The diagnosis was made today by Dr. Benjamin Shaffer in Washington D.C.
Dr. Shaffer, in consultation with the Lightning medical staff, has recommended that Halpern wait 4-6 weeks for the MCL injury to heal before surgically reconstructing the ACL rupture. Rehabilitation and recovery after the ACL repair is then expected to last 5-6 months. Dr. Shaffer also performed surgery on Halpern’s left knee in 2002 to repair a torn ACL.
Halpern sustained the injury during the third period of Team USA’s 5-4 loss against Canada at the IIHF World Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Tuesday. Halpern is serving as captain of Team USA at the tournament. [READ] |
