| 21st September, 2006 - 11:21 am | The News & Observer - Like an eBay auction, the bidding is under way for Jack Johnson and the clock is ticking. No one yet has met the Carolina Hurricanes' reserve price for the defensive prospect.
When Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford put the 19-year-old Michigan sophomore on the block, his phone started ringing. It hasn't stopped yet.
"When you throw that out there about such a top prospect, you get a lot of calls," Rutherford said Tuesday. "We've had a lot of calls. We've had teams that have made offers. This is not something we have to do. It's not something we're in a hurry to do.
"We like Jack Johnson. He's a good player. We're not going to trade him just to trade him, but if somebody comes along who fits into what we're trying to do here we'll take a look at it. But nothing's come along yet."
Johnson, who turned down the Canes' offer to turn pro last spring, earlier this month rebuffed another late approach after the Canes lost Frantisek Kaberle for most, if not all, of the season. That spawned Rutherford's willingness to trade a player considered one of the two best defensive prospects not yet in the NHL. [READ] |
